island life I

At the confluence of the Blackwood and Scott, the island's four hundred acres almost fill the north-east arm of the Blackwood's estuary. It sails in the mist of day's first light, an ark of ancient jarrah-marri forest preserved from the encroachment of development.

Kangaroos swim the river channels in the hope of greener pastures over here and finding no grasslands, become gaunt beggars at the steps of the inhabited houses or give up and swim back to the life they knew. A preservation colony of endangered ring-tailed possums was established here and find the forest much to their liking - no feral cats, dogs or foxes lying in ambush down below.

"Wot? You don't feed the wildlife? Pfffft!"
But the island really belongs to the creatures of the air and water. Cockatoos, wrens, eagles and parrots. Water monitors, frogs, water rats... and those denizens of both air and water - mosquitos!

Perhaps once visited by the Wadandi, although no trace has been found, the island first entered our history as the possession of a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars. He'd led the first colony established in this part of the country and gave his name to this place, but I'll bet the Wadandi spoke of it more lyrically.

It's not the island that draws my eye today,
but the waters that define it...

So pretty. I really need to get my ass over there (that's my arse in non-American talk - I'm sure they wouldn't allow donkeys in the ecosystem).
I am so jealous. The mere thought of island paradise just makes me quiver. And, as usual your pictures capture the heart and soul..........
tp
Rev: You and your ass would be welcome here anytime!
tp: You too tp! Although the island paradise today would have you shivering, rather than quivering ;) Winter is here...
Stunning photography! Looks like a piece of heaven on Earth - can I come too? :-)
Thanks Autumn :)
Of course you're welcome too! Anytime you can make it until we depart for the warmer islands of SE Asia. That'll be by the end of September at latest...
Gorgeous and stunning. Wish I was there now rather than this human concrete noise producing jungle I'm in at the moment.
Hi Trée - Wish you were here too, man. This place IS beautiful, but has its downside too - like only being able to cross the river every half hour. Like being thirty miles away from the nearest services (no stores or anything). Like having paired telephone lines which means the only internet connection available is dialup, at a max speed of 28K! A good place to hide from the mofern world...
Nice pics...
Howdy Professor!
Thank you and welcome :)
If I'm invited can I bring my jet skis?
Heh heh! Casey, Casey...
You're invited and you may bring your... wait a minute - jet skis you say? As in plural? What's up with that? You got one for each foot or what?
Hey Evenstar,
Your pictures always make me jealous... mainly because I don't have a decent camera anymore. And of course your great eye for the dramatic. :)
The idea of hiding away sounds great, not sure if I would want all the visitors though ;) and the dialup would be very annoying.
Well I better get back to work. catch you and bean later.
Cheers
Waz
Hey Waz! Good to hear from you again and thanks for that mate :)
It's pretty quiet down here alright, so a few visitors would be welcome actually. The (half speed) dialup is VERY annoying - hence our lack of activity of late....
Hope all's good for you - cheers!
_SPIKE_ would never have been happy doing anything but climbing the stairs.
Lucky _SPIKE_ ain't here then Nemo - no stairs anywhere!
Hope all's good in your world...
Happy weekend to you both, xo
Thank you sweetheart! Hopefully someday we'll all get to spend a happy weekend (or two) together somewhere.. Hoping this one's happy for you too xox
Alright, you two (Bean and Evenstar)... Enough of this lack of updating. If you don't update more often I'm afraid I'll have to cancel my subscription and DEMAND all my money back. Oh, and I wish that I could fly my arse over your way to see Australia in person, but that's another story. Wishing you guys the best!
Sigh... Heartfelt apologies JMF - and to all our other readers and lurkers as well!
Yes - we've been pretty tardy on the updating front and wouldn't blame anyone for considering this site abandoned. We're still here though! Just climbing a pretty steep learning curve and being retarded by a 30K dialup connection.
While we're really excited by the new stuff we've been working on, I've also been feeling guilty about my lack of updates here. I've been without a camera for a few weeks now too. Got the new one just the other day and was actually preparing a post when email notification of your comment lobbed in my inbox!
So - I promise to have a post up in the next couple of hours JMF. PLEASE don't demand your money back. Oh wait - we've already spent it all... heh heh! We'll show you what we spent it on as soon as it's all polished up...
Thanks for those best wishes - you know we wish them right back to you :)
I'd love it!, here's hoping. :-)
Autumn! Hi!
Here's hoping indeed :) :) :)
